Student Election Officer Program

What is the Student Election Officer Program?

California law now allows eligible high school students to be appointed to work as Election Officers. As Election Officers, students will participate in the operation of a poll site on Election Day. For students to be eligible, teachers will nominate qualified students to serve as Election Officers for each election. Students must be at least 16 years of age at the time of the election, with at least a 2.5 g.p.a. and be a United States Citizen.

What are we asking teachers to do?

What will Student Election Officers be expected to do?
  • Participate in a 3 hour Election Officer Training Class.
  • Be a member of a 3 or 4 person Board and participate in the operation of a polling place on election day.
  • Note: Election day can be a long one, 6:15 a.m. - 9:30 p.m., but it is a great experience!
How do students benefit from the experience of serving as an Election Officer?
  • This opportunity will give students a "hands on" experience, learning how local elections are conducted.
  • Students will receive training on how to open a polling place, process voters and close the polls.
  • It will inspire students to register and to vote when they turn 18.
  • Students gain a lifelong appreciation for the democratic process.
  • Students play an active and important role in their community.
  • A stipend of $90 will be paid for each election worked, plus $20 for attending the training class.
